Transcending Mandalas
3 Dimensional
(In this new series I am going beyond the limits of a traditional flat photograph.)
As a symbolic representation of the universe, Mandalas represent a dreamer’s search for completeness and self-unity. I have taken the imagery of an earthly environment (foliage, flowers, water) and surrounded it with spirit trees to create the main circular element in this work symbolizing completeness. This embodies the earth and a spiritual realm that literally rises above the background. Unity comes as the circular element stands off from the related photograph to become an integral whole.
The specifics of each piece:
The background photograph is printed as a dye sublimation on matte white aluminum. The center photograph is a custom-cut dye sublimation on matte white aluminum circle which is suspended by a hidden disc above the background photo. The rise is ½ inch. The whole piece is then outfitted with a float frame on the back.
There is also the option of printing as a 2-D print, either as dye sublimation on matte white aluminum or as a C-Print on photographic paper. The large circular element would contain a drop shadow to visually represent three dimensions.
Transcending Mandalas, Southwest
Here I am reinterpreting my Transcending Mandala series to reflect the spiritual nature of the Southwest. As a symbolic representation of the universe, Mandalas represent a dreamer’s search for completeness and selfunity. I have taken the imagery of an earthly environment (specifically the Southwestern USA) and in some cases, surrounded it with spirit trees to create the main circular element in this work to symbolize completeness. This embodies the earth and a spiritual realm that visually rises above the background. Cow sculls are symbolic of life-long protection, courage, agility and toughness.
